The war on drugs: Is it a genuine public health crusade or an attempt to carry out what author Michelle Alexander characterizes as “the New Jim Crow”?

A new report by Dan Baum for Harper’s Magazine suggests the latter. Specifically, Baum refers to a quote from John Ehrlichman, who served as domestic policy chief for President Richard Nixon when the administration declared its war on drugs in 1971. According to Baum, Ehrlichman said in 1994 that the drug war was a ploy to undermine Nixon’s political opposition — meaning, black people and critics of the Vietnam War…

!!!END THE DRUG WAR!!! (famous quotes)
“…marijuana [in its natural form] is one of the safest, therapeutically active substances known to man.”
    –Francis Young (DEA’s own Judge)
    http://norml.org/pdf_files/NORML_Clinical_Applications_for_Cannabis_and_Cannabinoids.pdf

"Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself; and where they are, they should be changed. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against possession of marijuana in private for personal use…”
    – Jimmy Carter (U.S.President)

“Congress should definitely consider decriminalizing possession of marijuana… We should concentrate on prosecuting the rapists and burglars who are a menace to society.”
-Dan Quayle (U.S. Representative & Vice President)

"Even if one takes every reefer madness allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition has done far more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could."
“The anti-marijuana campaign is a cancerous tissue of lies, undermining law enforcement, aggravating the drug problem, depriving the sick of needed help and suckering well intentioned conservatives and countless frightened parents.”
    – William F. Buckley Jr. (American conservative author and commentator)

"Studies have consistently failed to establish the existence of a link between the harshness of a country’s drug laws and its levels of drug use."
    -Kofi Annan (U.N. Secretary General)

“You bet I did -— and I enjoyed it.” ….when asked if he had ever smoked marijuana.
    – Michael Bloomberg (New York City Mayor)

"The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world."
    – Dr. Carl Sagan (American Cosmologist, Astrobilologist, author & science communicator)

"Pot is a better drug than alcohol. I'll prove it to you. You're at a ball game or a concert, and someone's really violent and aggressive and obnoxious, are they drunk or are they smoking pot?"
“Why is pot against the law? It wouldn't be because anyone can grow it, and therefore you can't make a profit off it, would it?”
“…It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit … unnatural?”
-Bill Hicks (Satirist, Social Critic, Stand-Up Comedian)

    – – My Personal Favorite – –

"If the words "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" don't include the right to experiment with your own consciousness, then the Declaration of Independence isn't worth the hemp it was written on."
    – Terence McKenna (American ethnobotanist, author, advocate for responsible use of natural psychedelic plants)

On top of that we need to stop treating an addiction as a crime and treat it as what it is, a mental disorder.

It's very disappointing in how ignorant and hypocritical our elected officials are in representing democracy and characterizing drugs just to crackdown on minorities. Alcohol is more devastating than marijuana and is perfectly legal and that is a scientific fact but yet marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug which is absolutely ridiculous. Nicotine and tobacco can be just as devastating but is still perfectly legal and was even pronounced as healthy before health organizations began to expose that lie. And the stab at democracy was directing the crackdown and mistreatment of minorities for our entire history when our Constitution and basically way of life supports the idea and practice of equality.

History channel did a really good 5-part series called "Illegal Drugs and How They Got That Way". Basically, it all comes down to racism.

Love how continual is the drug usage here in CZ 😀 we call all drugs by their original name, Marihuana and Pervitin as examples (canabis and meth), also this http://www.sinagl.cz/english-articles-sp-1756968361/6113-czech-republic-where-no-one-gives-a-fuck.html I love my country (not for drugs, just for the attitude)

So the government is clearly a corrupt organization run by xenophobic bigots and yet you still would trust those same evil, crooked people with gun control and single-payer healthcare? Excessive power is why the government is so corrupt.

  9. ourhandsaretied 4 months ago

All drugs should be decriminalised. It's equally absurd that ecstasy is a Schedule 1 drug as it is for weed.

You want people to be able to put whatever they want into their bodies (ex opium) but then you also want the taxpayer to be on the hook for everyones healthcare? Im ohk with putting whatever you want in your body but not for the taxpayer to pay for consequences. Cant have your cake and eat it too.

Druggie liberals want free stuff, who would have ever guessed? Kids stay off drugs, do well in school, serve your country, get your college paid for, and get a worthwhile degree. Do something that will keep you out of your Mom's basement, and hopefully make you happy at the same time. Don't be like the 20 somethings now who are in debt because they didn't get the GI bill, and a worthless degree that they will never be able to pay for, God bless.

  17. Corrupt CIA bastard's drug manufacturing system and drug trafficking system is the largest in the entire World, what's actually going on in Afghanistan,Columbia, Mexico,Peru is just few examples also wall street stock exchange is heavily involved with the drug money laundering and the depositing billion's upon billion's of dollar's into International masonic bank's do your own research and See how many royal families also international masonic banker's are profiting off drug's you will shock

  18. Carl Taylor 4 months ago

It used to be illegal to not grow marijuana in the area of Spain where I live. It was used to make rope and every family was required by law to produce a certain amount every year. Just shows how totally arbitrary drug regulation is. The history of drug laws proves beyond any doubt that criminalizing any drug simply shifts control of that drug to the Mafia, it increases violence and creates a black market.

Hey Kyle, why is Heroin, Cocaine, Meth, Krocadil ILLEGAL in China, Mexico, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia??? Is there also a racial conspiracy in these countries? Are you going to delete my comment because it's true?

This all should be common knowledge. I’ve known all this for years and I’m British.

So we only started this stupid drug war because some out of job prick needed a new scapegoat for job security and then it was further exasperated by a lying crook to lock up his political opponents and consolidate more power?… Can't say I'm surprised

My life was almost ruined by the war on drugs, particularly the war on marijuana. Thankfully as a white person whose family was able to pay for the ridiculous amount of fines, drug tests, and court mandated substance abuse counseling, I was able to get the charge erased from my public record. But the amount of money the local government drained me of for $15 worth of weed is disgustingly unjust, and my outcome is one of the best case scenarios.

  24. M K 4 months ago

We need to stop the war on cannabis. It is beyond ludicrous for it to be scheduled this way. Actually, I was wrong, to understand why cannabis is illegal you need to follow the money.
